Davis Message Cards Edited by Mike Trickett and John Garrett The Book This volume catalogues Davis Message Cards – Postcards first produced in the USA and then in England in the early twentieth century. These cards are not well known nowadays. We hope this small work may raise their profile a little. There is first a preamble giving what little we know about Davis Message Cards (DMCs). Our catalogue provides a listing of known (UK) cards where there was no known listing before. Apparently, the AM Davis company did not keep the records of the cards they made. This catalogue, therefore, provides a useful tool in making sense of what was produced. We begin with the postcards listed in sets of 10 as this seemed a natural arrangement given the similarity of design within the set. Near the end is an index which once the listing had been established has proved invaluable in providing a quick way of locating a card in the catalogue. One can see if the card is already in the collection or not. A check list (to the left) is provided to tick off new cards. Varieties exist. They are described and where they are known they are noted with an A, B, C etc. to the right of each set. Each set is introduced by a brief description and some example images of the cards. Varieties are described at the end of each set together with other potentially useful information. We end with a general history putting DMCs in the context of the development of greetings cards at the beginning of the twentieth century.
